Alveolar epithelial cells (AEC) are the primary targets for the majority of persistent viruses in the lungs, which are difficult to treat. Here, we investigated the biological responses of AEC to hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Our findings demonstrate that both viruses infect AEC and induce pro-inflammatory cytokines via Toll-like receptors (TLRs), but differ in their ability to induce interferon-stimulated genes. We also found that HCV infection induced mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis via receptor-interacting protein 3 (RIP3) in AEC, whereas HBV infection induced apoptosis via DR5 in AEC. Thus, our study provides new insights into the pathogenesis of viruses in AEC and identifies potential targets to target in the development of new anti-viral therapies.Q:
